Farmers’ Tractor March Amplifies Protest as Shambhu Border Stir Escalates Today

The announcement followed the withdrawal of a group of 101 farmers, known as a ‘Jathha,’ who had been stopped by the police at the Shambhu border earlier in the day due to security concerns.

Farmer Leader Sarwan Singh Pandher Announces Tractor March and ‘Rail Roko’ Protest in Punjab

In a significant development, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced a series of protests, including a tractor march outside Punjab on Monday, December 16, followed by a ‘Rail Roko’ in the state on December 18. Pandher urged Punjabis to join these demonstrations in large numbers to voice their concerns effectively.

The announcement came shortly after a group of 101 farmers, referred to as a ‘Jathha,’ was stopped by police at the Shambhu border on Saturday due to security concerns. Despite the setback, the farmers vowed to continue their protest against the government’s policies. “We appeal to all Punjabis to participate in the tractor march and the ‘Rail Roko’ protest to stand in solidarity,” Pandher said in an interview with ANI.

Farmers Clash with Police at Shambhu Border

Earlier on Saturday, security forces deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse farmers attempting a march towards Delhi, known as ‘Delhi Kooch.’ Heavy police barricades at the Shambhu border prevented the group from advancing, but the farmers remained undeterred.

Pandher alleged that 17 farmers sustained injuries during the clash, some in serious condition, while accusing the authorities of negligence in providing medical treatment. “The government, despite being the fifth-largest economy, used excessive force on peaceful protesters. Chemical water, tear gas shells, and bombs were used against us. Many injured farmers are not receiving proper medical care in hospitals, which reflects gross negligence,” he claimed. Pandher called on the Punjab government to ensure adequate treatment for the injured farmers.

    Criticism of Opposition Leadership

In his statement, Pandher also criticised the opposition for failing to address farmers’ concerns during the ongoing winter session of Parliament. He specifically targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of not fulfilling his promises to the farming community. “The opposition must go beyond statements and actively bring our issues to the forefront. Parliament should be stalled for our concerns, just as it is for other agendas,” Pandher said.

Police Heighten Security Amid Renewed Farmer Protests

Tensions escalated at the Shambhu border when farmers demanded permission to proceed to Delhi. Addressing police officers, a farmer leader appealed for peaceful passage. “SP Sahab, we wish to protest peacefully. Do not block our march. Let us raise our voice without being suppressed by barricades,” he said.

In response, the Ambala Superintendent of Police emphasized the need for proper permissions to proceed. “If you wish to march to Delhi, you must obtain the necessary approvals. Until then, we request you to remain peaceful,” the officer stated, citing ongoing legal proceedings and a Supreme Court hearing scheduled for December 18.

As farmers gear up for further demonstrations, security has been ramped up at the Shambhu border. The protests are gaining momentum, with farmers determined to compel the government to address their demands.
